Welcome To Wollaton Road Methodist Church!
Mounted on the North Wall of the main worship hall, situated just to the right of the pulpit is a Cross. The Cross which is made from dark wood has quite a history. The wood used to make the Cross is cut from an old stretcher pole. The upright of the Cross is the centre of the pole and the two arms of the Cross are the handles from both ends. The Beeston Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade donated the stretcher from which the wood was taken. This was because a number of local St. John Ambulance members have connections with Wollaton Road Church; in particular the late Mr Norman Grimes who made the Cross for the church in 1983. Mr Grimes himself was a former Divisional Superintendent of the Beeston Division and also for many years a Church Steward. Since the St. John Ambulance Brigade is a voluntary organisation, some items of equipment are often donated for training purposes. This was the case with the stretcher which was provided many years ago by the Chilwell Royal Ordnance Depot. In fact this old stretcher had its own history. During the First World War the Chilwell Depot suffered an horrendous armaments explosion with many dead and seriously wounded. The stretcher was used to carry out one of the first casualties. It is therefore appropriate that this piece of equipment should be used in such a way, having reached the end of its use as a stretcher.
