Welcome To Wollaton Road Methodist Church!
Each month, a group of up to 25 walkers meets to tackle avery pleasant 5 to 7 mile walk in the local area. We would like to take this opportunity to invite YOU to join us! We meet on a monthly basis, usually on the third Tuesday of the month, with a starting time of around 11.00.We take sandwiches for a picnic lunch en route and we aim to return to Beeston at approximately 16.00. Of course we do rely on the weather and it may be necessary to cancel at short notice. The venture also relies on enough car owners being available to ferry us to our starting point. The aim is to organise walks in Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire. We are likely to encounter some muddy footpaths, so stout walking shoes are strongly recommended. We also suggest a spare pair of shoes to change into at the end of the walk in respect for those who have provided transport and who will not appreciate muddy patches in their cars. It is our practice to offer £2 per person as a contribution to the drivers’ running costs. The walks are not intended as a challenge; they are undertaken at a very leisurely pace. If you are interested in joining us please make contact prior to the dates given for further details and to confirm arrangements. Our December Walk - Calke Abbey Estate. The weather was yet again perfect, a glorious winter sunny day by the time we started the walk. 26 members enjoying a 6 mile walk around Calke Abbey Estate, Staunton Harold Reservoir and Ticknall. Our route took us from the village hall car park and out through the edge of the village into the Calke Abbey Estate. The 740 acre estate of the late Harpur Crewe Family. Ticknall village is the one time home of Ted Moult. We journeyed on along the main route through the estate, passing the weirs and stream, until eventually the main house came into view. After a brief stop to admire the Abbey the group continued on through the estate to our coffee stop, which was taken adjacent to the stable yard overlooking a deer reserve. We were able to make use of picnic tables and toilets, a vast improvement on what we were used to i.e a grassy mound in the middle of a field. After coffee the first section of the walk was an elevated section overlooking a tranquil lake and stream where Canada geese and mallards were busy, the reflections in the perfectly still lake were beautiful. Finally we passed through two or three fields to emerge at the edge of Staunton Harold Reservoir for our lunch stop - our leader had again kindly arranged for both picnic tables and toilets to be available at this point. So lunch was taken overlooking the reservoir and in glorious sunshine. Suitably refreshed we continued away from the edge of the reservoir which in the afternoon sunshine looked a picture. we eventually emerged onto a very pretty section of the National Forest and onto a few more fields, some with horses. Finally emerging on the main road into Ticknall and our starting point. Our Next walk is on Tuesday 20th December If you hav’nt yet joined us, why not try it, you will be sure of a welcome!
