NCH - The Children's Charity.

NCH - The Children’s Charity is the children’s charity of the Methodist Church was founded in 1869 and will be 139 years old on 8th July 2008. The organisation exists to help the many children in this country still unable to be privileged to have a normal family life. This worthwhile cause was founded in 1869 when it was realised how many very poor children were abandoned, having been allowed to fend for themselves, in turn resulting in ill-health and a premature death.
Children
Through more than 460 projects in the UK NCH supports over 89,000 vulnerable children, young people and their families. Wherever possible NCH likes to keep families together although this is not always possible. Children are cared for up to the age of 16 after which special units are available. Here they learn to take care of themselves in the wider world. Above all they are encouraged to reach their full potential.

Children like Sophie, who was born prematurely and diagnosed with life-threatening Cystic Fibrosis. After struggling both to give 24 hour care to her sick child as well as cope with the emotional trauma, Sophie’s mum was introduced to an NCH project which helps children with life-threatening conditions. It offers practical and emotional support to children, parents, and other family members.

There are a number of events arranged during the year to raise funds. In addition members & friends are invited to save small sums weekly in League of Light collecting boxes. The NCH is also supported through prayer for consideration of its valuable work caring for needy children and families.

Celebrate - our long history & roots in Methodism and the desire for social justice.

Pray for - vulnerable and excluded children and young people, for the difficulties and challenges they face in their lives every day.

Celebrate - the loyal and continued support of Methodists who give their time and talents to raise funds for us, who volunteer in our shops or at our projects.

Pray for - the resources and partnerships that we need to continue our work with the church, communities, individuals, businesses, local authorities and those who use our services.

NCH Convenant.

Every child has the right to live, to be safe and to be loved. Every young person has the right to be housed, to have enough money to live in dignity and to have enough support for the future. Every young person has the right to justice, to realise their potential and to be given the space to become independent.

In an often cruel and imperfect world, we uphold the work of NCH with children and young people in danger, in need and at risk. We support the growth of this work and the pursuit of these rights for the young, the discounted and the vulnerable. We make this covenant with NCH for the sake of all God’s children.

The Leprosy Mission.

The Leprosy Mission is an international Christian charity giving aid to some 300,000 people in 29 countries. There are over 2000 staff world-wide working with a budget of £9.5 millions ( Approx. $13 millions ).

At Wollaton Road we are playing our part in this fund raising, albeit in a small way - but every little helps! We are one of 12 churches in the Beeston & Chilwell Leprosy Mission Group which in its latest financial year raised £5,500.

At the last meeting of the group we heard of a Leprosy Mission hospital in a place called Belgaum which is just managing to exist in extremely difficult circumstances. We have decided to donate this year’s funds to that cause.

We have made a good start with our efforts this year, having raised £100 at a coffee morning and hopefully this trend will continue throughout the year.

Much of the work in Belgaum is innovative, especially in socio - economic care. India is a big country, and leprosy hospitals can feel isolated and neglected. Belgaum is underfunded and has many needs which are unlikely to be satisfied, at least in the short term. Yet it continues to do wonderful work both within the hospital and the community, actively fund - raising and seeking local sponsorship whenever possible to supplement its budget.

Much is achieved despite the lack of many basic necessities for patient care, such as a heavy duty washing machine for patients’ clothes ( outside staff will not wash clothes by hand ), aluminium crutches, ( wooden ones are heavy and break ), sponge mattresses for seriously ill patients, new fire extinguishers, geysers to provide hot water and much much more!

The Leprosy Mission web site is at: - www.leprosymission.org.uk and information in respect of local events can be obtained by e-mail to: - tlmi@beestonmethodist.org.uk

Hope 2008
About Hope 08, well by the end of November 2007 churches and Christians in over 1080 villages towns or cities across the UK had registered to express interest in taking part in HOPE 2008 initiatives in their community. We expect these numbers to continue to rise whilst those who have registered will be finalising their plans. We have already heard many encouraging stories from locations across the UK of people being trained and even employed to facilitate the mission which our churches are going to engage in during 2008 and beyond. Do please continue to let us know what your plans are and if we can help in any way.
