Evening services tend to be of a more traditional nature with the common use of the electronic organ and singing led by our choir in four-part harmony. Invariably the service begins with an unannounced introit sung by the choir.
In the old Methodist Hymn Book were written the words, "Methodism was born in song.” Wollaton Road has had a strong choral tradition going back to the early days of Primitive Methodism, and following in the tradition of the ‘ranters’, we are proud of our heritage and enjoy singing and contributing to our services of worship.
The music library nowadays is much more comprehensive and covers a wide range of traditional and modern pieces.
In November 2001 a new church organ was installed.
A committee formed from the main Church Council obtained quotations and specifications from the main suppliers in the UK for a digital electronic instrument, which would meet the needs of the services and as an instrument capable of supporting concerts and recitals.
It was decided to visit the Viscount showroom in Suffolk, who distribute the prestige range of organs, and play each of their range.
The Prestige IV model proved to be ideal for our requirements, and subject to final approval of the full Church Council, an order was placed.
Specification of our Church organ: -
The organ has two full manuals with presets for each, and a full R.C.O. radiating, concave pedal board, also with its own presets.
There are 41 speaking stops with couplers for swell to great, swell to pedal and great to pedal. It has 6 general organ presets, and these together with the manual and pedal presets are programmable from the console.
It has midi capability with a recording and playback system built in.
The general organ presets and the couplers are repeated as foot pistons. The organ has 8 separate memory banks, which can be programmed for all presets in each memory. The organ can also be voiced for English 1, English 2, French baroque and German baroque.
An inaugural concert was given by a group of distinguished Nottingham organists in March 2002.
We have a choir of 15 members and sing many Anthems during the church’s year. Visitors to our church who enjoy singing are welcomed into our choir at any time, with the emphasis on friendship and fellowship.
Like all choirs we are always ready to welcome new members, so if you live locally or you are moving into our area and enjoy harmony singing, then you can come along to a practice.
You will be sure of a warm welcome.
Practices are held on Wednesday evenings 19:30 to 21:00, for more information please E-mail the choir at choir@beestonmethodist.org.uk
